Melissa Bennett is fourteen, good at Sunday, and split down the middle. She means every hymn. She also has a lift in her chest that will not sit inside the drawing she was taught. She dates a kind boy, passes every interview, almost tells a friend, and burns the only pages that were honest. She never names the thing. Silence feels like obedience. The book ends when she is set apart and walks into the MTC as Sister Bennett — both of her on the plane, neither erased.
